The folks at VMToolkit.com have recently added another invaluable tool to their repertoire. With the free VhdResizer, administrators can solve two of the most common issues involving the management of Microsoft Virtual Server or Virtual PC virtual hard disk (VHD) files:
- Increasing the size of a virtual hard disk
- Converting a virtual hard disk from dynamically expanding to a fixed size, or vice-versa
A quick how-to for this tool is available in my Tech Line article VhdResizer: Another Tool for your Virtual Toolbox.

Not so “Cool Tool”. When resizing the VHD to a larger size, this utility produces a “Disk Read Error” and you cannot boot with the new VHD. Mounting as a secondary disk works fine and I’ve resized the partition (another step not defined util you spend time Googling it). Various articles/forums posted with this error with no solution, including on VMToolkit.com.
